As I was watching Fifty the series (which by the way is one of my favorite Nigerian series at the moment) a scene in one of the episodes featuring two of the leading characters Lizzie and Kate got me thinking about girlfriends and the importance of friends in our lives.

You see Kate has Breast Cancer and she had double mastectomy procedure, on her birthday; Lizzie gave her prosthetic breasts as a gift, she wanted her to look and feel sexy for her husband Chike. It was a sweet and thoughtful gesture, the scene between the two friends was so emotional and thought provoking that it inspired my write up today. The message was clear, we all need that one friend who knows us better than others do, someone we can count on when the chips are down. Someone we can trust (I know this bit backfires sometimes but we need to focus on the positives, there are still nice and trust worthy people in the world).

I have been blessed to have a few good friends who are bad in a good way if you know what I mean; they let me be who I am without fear of judgment. They are not afraid to tell you the truth. We share secrets about varying topics like our latest crush (you know that #mcm) the kiss, the date, our family issues, sex, those awkward moments, fashion trends, the embarrassing moments, funny stories and the list goes on. We have little hints and code words aka inside jokes for people we have little or no love for that only our group of friends knows, like that annoying teacher or boss, the uncivilized guy or over-dramatic girl in the neighborhood. We’ve broken rules that will forever remain a secret, I repeat forever.

Friends are your free access to laughs and fun times. They don’t need a topic to make you laugh; they can make you roll on the floor laughing with just a side look. It’s true to say when a group of friends are together; the comic level is higher than any comedy show. We choose our friends, not our family but sometimes-family members can be friends too; in my case my sisters are one of my best friends.

Friendship takes work and going through the growing pains, it has to be cultivated and nurtured to be meaningful over years. A good friend inspires you in a way you never imagined you could be. They wake you up to all of the possibilities within you and help you to realize your full potential.

A true friend shares your joys and sorrows. They make navigating life’s journey sweeter and meaningful by being there for the milestone events such as marriage, births, death of a significant other, death of those close to you, going through a divorce or any other important event.

Friends can challenge us, confuse us, and sometimes, we might wonder why we bother but friendship is an important aspect of living. They help us realize a meaningful life.

So call up a dear friend today and tell them how much you love and appreciate them.
