On days when you’ve seen better days, it can be hard to get yourself together – Roots aren’t died, skin is dried, eyes are tired – don’t get fired. I just had a similar day, where looking in the mirror was tough. When you aren’t feeling your best, you usually aren’t looking your best either. My eyes were glassy, and hard to keep open, the corners of my mouth looked like they were falling off (i.e. dry, flaky, chapped and almost bleeding), and my head hurt. In times like these, you don’t have to take the day off or not show your face until you’re feeling better. You can still be presentable, even if it it’s not your best day.

Luckily, we girls have a little help – It’s called Sephora, and we’re happy with all of the beautiful beauty products to keep us looking and feeling our best. When your tired, achy body is suffering, your self-esteem doesn’t have to. Here’s what I did to make it look like nothing bad ever happens to me. P.S. You can get away with second day hair; it’s hotter that way – Fuller and sexier, Bed Head! The trick is just to smooth it back into a bun, with the end tucked under itself, put on your make-up, and then release the bun and shake your hair all around. It will fall into place, making it look effortless (because it was).

The Foundation

Start with a really, good paste – We mean it. This is the backdrop, and on days like this, you need a full coverage one – Try TOO FACED Born This Way Foundation ($49.00, Sephora) to get your perfect match. For a cuter, fresh-faced look, go with TOO FACED Peach Perfect Comfort Matte Foundation – Peaches and Cream Collection ($45.00, Sephora), if you think you’re better than me, and don’t need much coverage. Take out a paint brush, you’re about to become a work of art. I like to run the make up brush under water first, so it’s moist, and then drop a dab of concealer into the palm of my hand, ok? – Like the World. Swirl it around with your brush, and start painting yourself a prettier picture (the other face, we’re used to seeing). Make sure you only show us one side of your face, not too – the good side – No one likes a “hyper on line 2.”

Here’s the Secret – CLINIQUE Beyond Perfecting Foundation + Concealer ($36.00, Sephora). Don’t be fooled by the name, we don’t recommend using this as a foundation; it’s a concealer only, but a good one. We swear by this stuff. Here’s what you do. Apply a strip of this down the center of your nose, wave the wand over your forehead, for a magical highlight (Look Alive!), then apply generously underneath your eyes, right where you need it most. This trick, alone, can save the day. You will look awake in minutes, and your eyes will appear brighter. The nicest thing about the Perfecting Concealer, is it comes with a plush, soft wand, so when you’re applying it, it still feels like you’re lying in bed with your face snuggled up against your velvety pillow.

Put the Life Back Into Yourself and Hide Some More Things

Put the life back into your skin by adding back in the color. Some days you can feel like the life has been sucked right out of you. That’s where bronzer comes in – We love this stuff! If you need this often, then go for the splurge with TOM FORD The Ultimate Bronzer ($132.00, Sephora) or if you are only using it sporadically, you can us this one – HOURGLASS Ambient Lighting Bronzer Mini ($32.00, Sephora). Apply this to your face (forehead), at the top of your eyebrow arch (down the sides just down to right above your cheekbones, on either side), down the sides of your nose, alongside where you put the concealer, underneath your cheekbones, in a contouring sweep, to make them stand out – especially if your face is feeling puffy or bloated (if you’ve been up sick the night before, you’ll know what we mean). And you can also use it right underneath your chin, for a face-slimming effect, and even down the sides of your neck, to make your waist look thinner. What? Oh yeah – your neck is 1/2 the size of your waist, “Pretty Woman.”

And to finish it all off, we recommend going over your entire face with a few sweeps of TOO FACED Unicorn Tears Bronzer – Life’s A Festival Collection ($38.00, Sephora). Then look in the mirror and smile at your accomplishments. Don’t cry sweet-face, you’re problems aren’t even real.

Open Your Eyes

On days like these, we recommended going heavy on the eyes, with darker, smokier tones. No sense trying to make it look like you’re not wearing any make up, go for dramatic, instead. The benefit of darker shadows, is that they make the puffiness recede, and your irises come forward. So put the color all around your eyes, right up to your brow bone, and give yourself a smudged look, underneath your bottom lashes. For me, I don’t use any mascara below the eyes, especially when they are tired because it has a tendency to rub off, creating bags, right where you’re trying to cover things up. Get a bold color palette like TOO FACED Boudoir Eyes Soft & Sexy Eyeshadow Palette ($45.00, Sephora), then just go with two colors, to open up your eye lids. Use the highlight color all over your lid, and then do a light sweeping of grey or a dark tone over the crease, extending upward at the outer corners of your eyes – blend. This one’s cute too – TOO FACED Chocolate Bon Bons Eyeshadow Palette ($59.00, Sephora). Follow up with a black eyeliner (thinly line bottom and upper lash lines, without closing off at the corners). STELLAR Hyper Eyeliner Retractable Pencil ($25.00, Sephora) is a good one to use, and bring it with you for touch ups. You can also use a shimmery silver or lighter pencil to smudge the look, and avoid harsh lines. Then, follow up with one of these, to open your eyes up, until you look completely awakened (use as much as you need, you’re smart, you won’t go overboard) – LANCÔME Monsieur Big Mascara ($31.00, Sephora) or TOO FACED Better Than Sex Mascara ($30.00, Sephora) – ‘Nough Said.

Be Cheeky

A really nice blush can make you look cute and youthful all at once. The trick is in the color. Try for a bright, pink color, that’s not too fuschia in tone. A perfect blush should be exactly that – blush, the color match of rosy cheeks or blushing because you got caught walking in late to work. This can really do the trick to make you look well rested and cheerful-cheeked. Here are our most endearing recommendations for creating a look of innocence: MAKE UP FOR EVER Artist Face Color Highlight, Sculpt and Blush Powder ($29.00, Sephora) and BENEFIT COSMETICS Dandelion Box o’ Powder Blush ($38.00, Sephora). I don’t know why, but I run it over my cheekbones about eight times on each side. Whatever you do, just make sure they are even, so you can be a normal adult today.

Don’t Get Too Lippy

Ok, your’e done; That’s enough. You don’t need to do anymore or you’re going to look overdone. Don’t do anything too bold with your lips, but you don’t want them flaking off from dehydration, either. Just find something glossy and innocent, like your sweetheart cheeks, there, and you’re ready to go! Have you seen this adorable collection (a partnership between Moschino and Sephora) SEPHORA COLLECTION MOSCHINO + SEPHORA Bear Lip Gloss Chain – ($40.00, Sephora)? – We love that these come as keychains, so you can take them with you, even if you don’t have time to apply it in the morning; you will always have it with you. Go for the lightest tones on days like these, and think glossy and wet looking, nothing that’s matte and dark. Here’s another one we like: BARE MINERALS GEN NUDE™ Buttercream Lipgloss ($23.00, Sephora).

That’s all – look complete.

When you finish it you will breathe a sigh of relief, seeing the transformation. The good make up tools like these come in handy on days when you’re struggling to make it through. Relax, knowing you did a good job, feeling like you still have it together, and go into work with a calm, cool and collected, positive disposition – No one likes it when you get too lippy.

And you’re out the door!
