With the news of a second wave of COVID-19 as well as new variants being discovered, countries have begun to gradually step into another phase of lockdown. While this is the best move to curb the virus and flatten the curve, it is not without its impact on our physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Here are 15 easy wellness tips to keep your body, soul and mind together especially during this pandemic.

This is one of the ways of improving your mental and physical health. In a report published by Harvard Medical School, the writer explains that, “ taking a few minutes to focus your mind each day can reduce stress, pain, depression and more”. The secret to enjoying its benefits is to make it a habit. Burke Lennihan, a registered nurse who teaches wellness at Harvard University was quoted to have said, “Start with 10 minutes, or even commit to five minutes twice a day. Preferably meditate at the same time every morning. That way you’ll establish the habit, and pretty soon you’ll always meditate in the morning, just like brushing your teeth”.

2.Eat fruits:

A research published on Medical News Today showed that those who consumed 3.7 servings of fruits daily within a 2 week period, experienced ‘improvements in psychological well-being. In particular, these participants demonstrated improvements in vitality, motivation, and flourishing’.

3.Work out often:

You do not need a gym subscription to keep fit. Personally, I have found some YouTube channels to be very helpful when I need to sweat. A simple search on YouTube will give you a plethora of options. When it comes to the benefits of working out, the list is endless.

4.Read books or blogs:

A 2009 study at the University of Sussex found that. “reading can reduce stress by up to 68%. This is because your mind is invited into a literary world that is free from the stressors that plague your daily life”.

5.Take Bubble baths:

If going to a spa seems out of reach for now, you can still enjoy the benefits by taking bubble baths at home. Journaling allows you to express how you feel per time. It is an incredible tool for reducing stress.

7.Listen to a podcast:

Quite frankly, this is very much like meditation. Again, it also depends on the kind of podcast that you are listening to. Preferably, you should be opting for ‘feel good’ podcasts that help you relax or comedy podcasts that makes you laugh.

8.Improve your diet:

We touched on this briefly when we talked about eating fruits. A healthy diet improves your overall mental and physical health.

9.Go offline:

There is so much happening online- good and bad. However, the negativity that comes out of it can sometimes take a deep toll on our mental health. Our advice is that you take some time off from digital media. In that time, you can opt to meditate, watch a movie, read a book, listen to your podcast etc.

10.Declutter your space:

Whether it is your closet, kitchen or even your digital space, decluttering is a good mental and physical exercise.

11.Redcorate your space:

When you declutter, you may begin to see spaces that you need to tweak. Sometimes, redecorating alone can get you excited.

12.Have a daily routine:

Having a routine especially during a lockdown helps. For those of us who work from home, this is how we stay active and sane. Having a to-do list also helps to ensure that you stay on top of your assignments.

13.Take your vitamins:

You may never be able to completely have all your vitamins from your diet. This is where supplements come in.

14.Get house plants:

A report shared by Google in 2019 showed that a lot of people were beginning to take interests in plants during the lockdown. While there are different reasons why people have taken to becoming plant parents especially as they have more time on their hands, these plants equally have some great benefits to our body. Research has shown that some of these plants equally helps to purify the air.

15.Get enough sleep:

Ever heard the slogan, ‘you cannot cheat nature’? It is very true. Your mind and body need to shut down completely at some point during the day to enable the body to recuperate.
