Remember how when you were little, you were always given sweets, cookies anytime you showed signs of being upset? And these sweets made you happy and perhaps stopped the tears? This is because sugar is seen as a reward by the brain, so the more you eat it, the more you reinforce the reward, and the harder it can become to quit sugar.
Most times, when I have gone all day without eating, I tend to indulge my sweet tooth later in the day and I can be excessive doing this.
Also on busy days, it can be very easy to resort to a sugary snack midway through the afternoon to keep your energy levels elevated. Trust me, it is very easy to!
Add that with the sugar crashes you experience after eating added sugars, which cause you to seek out more sugar, and it can start to feel as though sugar is a habit you can’t break.
Here are a few ways to kick that sugar habit…
1. Eat protein with every meal
Eating healthy proteins with your meal helps balance your blood sugar, so you cease having sugar cravings.
2. Eat natural sugars instead of junk food
Fruit is the obvious answer. It contains natural sugar paired with healthy nutrients and antioxidants. Reaching for a handful of grapes or slices of water melon when the sugar cravings kick in can be a helpful way to transition away from junk food.
3. Get enough sleep
Lack of sleep the activities of the appetite-stimulating hormone. This combination increases appetite and the desire for quick-energy simple sugars.
4. Be consistent
You just have to make that transition and stick to it consistently until it becomes a habit that replaces your sugar cravings.
5. Drink apple cider vinegar
Adding one or two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to a large bottle of water and drinking it slowly throughout the day can help reduce sugar cravings.
Kicking a sugar habit is difficult, but if you have the determination, it’s easier to do. Trust that if you stay consistent, give it enough time, replace junk food with natural fruit sugars, and sleep well, your sweet tooth will have less control of you.
