Bright Okpocha a.k.a Basketmouth is a Nigerian Comedian and Actor. An indigene of Abia State but born in Lagos, he completed his primary and secondary school education in Apapa, Lagos and went on to bag a degree in Sociology and Anthropology from the University of Benin, Edo State. He discovered his drumming skill in 1991 and began rapping in 1994.
Basketmouth founded a 7-man group, “Da Psychophats”, which went for shows and rap concerts in 1995. However, the group broke up before they released any piece. He went on to form another rap group known as “Da Oddz” with his brother Godwin and Muyiwa Osunrobi. They performed at a number of shows but didn’t make any break as their brand of rap did not have a following in Nigeria at the time.
Basketmouth has been a stand-up comedian for over a decade and has gone on to host a number of shows including his popular comedy concerts, ‘Basketmouth Uncensored’, which has been held at a number of venues in the world. He began his career in comedy while he was a student of UNIBEN but his first appearance was a failure, and that prompted him to improve on his comedy skills.
He caught his big break in 2001 after he met Ali Baba. Basketmouth began to make a name for himself when he performed at ‘Hanging with the Home Boys’ a concert at which his performance wowed the audience and earned him their acceptance. He also got engaged in the monthly ‘Motherland’ concert hosted by Lagbaja, and ‘Nite of a Thousand Laughs’, a popular comedy show back then.
Basketmouth has performed at several shows both in Nigeria and abroad. He has organized popular stand-up comedy concerts like Basketmouth Uncensored across the globe. He performed at the Choice FM comedy show in the UK, and at the international congress in Ethiopia, where he was the only Nigerian comedian present.
He has gained brand Ambassadorship endorsement deals with Globacom, Dana Air, and more. Like all of that isn’t enough success, this husband to Elsie Okpocha, and father to Jason and Janelle, has won the National Comedy Award 2005, Best Stand-up Comedian of the Year 2006, Flytime Appreciation Award 2016, and most recently, the Savannah Pan-African Comic Award 2017. On Valentine’s day this year, Basketmouth held a sold out concert in the famous Wembley Arena which contributed to certifying him as one of the greatest Comedians out of Africa.
As he celebrates his birthday today, we wish him the best in all his future endeavors.
